The numbers are disturbing and the Ontario Provincial Police say excessive speed is behind the rise in road fatalities.

Police said 30 deaths this year are 13 more than last year for the same time period.

Excessive speed continues to threaten the safety of other road users with more than 1,400 charges so far this year laid by the OPP against drivers clocked at 50 km/hour or more over the posted speed limit.

Police officials told CTV too many inexperienced drivers are in a rush and feel invincible behind the wheel.

"They fee everything is good and they're behind the wheel and they're going to get wherever they're going, and the faster they get there the better,” said Constable Andre Taschereau, OPP.

“We have to keep educating and I think people have to keep that message in their head. If you get there 15 seconds ahead of time, is it really worth it? Taking a chance with your life or someone else's life?"

With the Canada Day long weekend just days away, officers will be on the lookout for offenders.
