In the wake of city council’s decision to build a new arena and event centre on the Kingsway, instead of downtown, there are serious concerns about the future of the Sudbury Theatre Centre.

It's in some financial difficulty.

At a friends of STC meeting this week, it was revealed the theatre is approximately $400,000 in debt.

It's said to be the result of what was termed ‘an overly ambitious presentation and production schedule' costing more than $1 million.

According to the STC, the struggles stem from the inability to re-coup the money through ticket sales, along with a failure to attract a younger audience.

“We’ve launched what we've called friends of the Sudbury Theatre Centre,” said Gerry Copeman, Sudbury Theatre Centre board of governors president.

“They'll be directing a campaign to ensure the financial survival of the institution, and we as the board of governors will continue to provide opportunities for great theatre to happen in the city.”

Copeman said the STC board is hoping to acquire corporate sponsorships for its theatre space, auditorium and cabaret.
