SUDBURY -- Environment Canada has issued special weather statements for several communities in northeastern Ontario due to an approaching storm expected to bring up to 25 cm of snow over the weekend.

According to the weather alert issued Friday morning, a Texas low will start to bring precipitation across much of southern Ontario and parts of the northeast Friday night.

"Snow will begin Saturday morning and last into Sunday. The heaviest snow is expected Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning," Environment Canada said.

The following communities are expected to get 10 – 25 cm of snow:

  • Espanola
  • French River
  • Killarney
  • Manitoulin Island
  • Mattawa
  • North Bay
  • Powassan

Accumulating snow is expected to cause poor road conditions. The alerts may be upgraded to snowfall warnings as the storm gets closer.
