It's a chance to enjoy lunch with your friends and help the Sudbury Food Bank assist those who are less fortunate.

Today, the food bank celebrated the opening of its new hotdog and sausage cart today, joined by some of its community partners.

The new business venture is the food bank's first social enterprise.

Right now, it's set to operate weekdays on the food bank's property.

Dan Xilon is the Executive Director of the Sudbury Food Bank.

“Every dollar that the food bank makes gets us $6 in food value. So, let’s say it makes $20,000, that will be $120,000 in food value. Not bad for a six-month period, very nice. And remember, you’re not donating here, you are coming to enjoy lunch so that somebody else who doesn’t have lunch can have a lunch.” said Xilon.

Travis Gillard is an account manager at WAT Supplies.

“Well, the food bank is a great thing that goes on for our city, promoting to people. So, we felt that we would gear up to these new ideas and we kind of came together with a doughnut cart, or doughnut-dog cart. So, we ended up just throwing around some, you know, things we could do. And we came up coming across a cart, so we ended up just donating to the food bank to get something started.” said Gillard.

The cart will feature something called the “doughnut-dog,” which uses a long doughnut for the bun of a hot dog.
