Police on Manitoulin Island say a fishing trip over the weekend turned into tragedy when a canoe capsized.
Ontario Provincial Police say they responded to a report of a capsized canoe on Sunday, August 4 around 8:00 p.m. in the North Channel of Lake Huron, near Sagamok First Nation. They were assisted by the Anishinabek Police Service and Algoma Emergency Medical Services.
Officials say an investigation revealed that two people were fishing near Sagamok Point in a canoe when the vessel capsized.
One of the men made it safely to shore and notified emergency services.
The second occupant was found without vital signs by people nearby and was unable to be revived by EMS.
As a result, 48-year-old Yvon Toulouse from Sagamok First Nation was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say the pair was not wearing life jackets when the canoe overturned.
An investigation is ongoing through the Officer of the Chief Coroner and Forensic Pathology Service.
