A post-mortem revealed that Sudbury politician Michael Vagnini died of “medical causes,” Greater Sudbury Police said Wednesday.

“As a result of the investigation into the death of Michael Vagnini conducted by the Ontario Provincial Police in collaboration with the Greater Sudbury Police Service and the Coroner’s Office, foul play has been ruled out,” police said in a news release.

“A post-mortem was conducted on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2024, confirming that his death was attributed to medical causes, the details of which will remain private in consultation with his family.”

Vagnini, 62, disappeared Jan. 27, prompting a massive search and an outpouring of concern. His remains were found Feb. 13 on Reserve Camp Road in Atikiameksheng Anishnawbek First Nation, near his black Dodge Ram 1500, around 2:30 p.m.

“We once again wish to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Michael Vagnini, and we continue to ask that their privacy be respected during this difficult time,” police said Wednesday.

“We also would like to extend our gratitude to the Ontario Provincial Police as well as the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek Police for their collaboration on this investigation.”
