Update:

West Nipissing Police Service continues to caution the public about ice conditions reported Thursday affecting the upper Sturgeon River.

Police say the Power Generation had trouble controlling the water flow at the Sturgeon Falls dam, which resulted in rising water levels in the upper portion of the river.

Water flows have been brought under control, but the situation impacted the ice conditions, including thickness.

Cracks and ice near shorelines have all been altered by the event.

Police remind people using frozen waterways that the fluctuating temperatures and yesterday’s incident can make ice unstable and weak. Anyone planning outdoor activities that include being on ice should be very mindful of their environment.

People should check the ice conditions ahead of time, should wear a flotation suit, have ice picks with them and be familiar with their use, bring a fully charged cellular telephone with them. When travelling on or over ice try not to travel alone and always let someone know where you are heading and when you are expected back.
