ELLIOT LAKE -- Two adults have died following a house fire, early Saturday morning, in the City of Elliot Lake.
Fire crews were called to a home on Hart Road around 5:15 a.m. to find the house engulfed in flames.
Officials say the flames were so intense that they couldn't enter the property.
It's unclear if the two people found inside the home were the homeowners; forensic investigators are still trying to identify the couple.
"Right now we've determined that the origin of the fire was in the basement, in the northeast corner of the home. And right now, once we determine origin, we're looking for potential causes," said James Allen, a fire investigator with the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal. "Potential causes can be electrical, it can be smoking, it can be anything we find in that area of origin so right now we're in the process of looking for it."
Damage to the home is extensive, which made the job all the more difficult for investigators.
Crews are on scene demolishing what's left of the property.
"We forensically dug through the material to locate victims," said Allen. "Some samples have been taken and they've been sent to the Centre of Forensic Sciences for examination. There will be post-mortems conducted on Monday in Sudbury, and once that's concluded, we're going to have a report and a determination of cause will be made."
Neighbours tell CTV News the scene was a shock to many of them.
They didn't even hear the fire engines until they had woken up on Saturday.
