Provincial police in Moosonee, Ont., have arrested two men for breaching their probation orders after a strange series of events.

First, on June 28, the James Bay detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received multiple calls reporting a “suspicious person” getting off the train about 20km south of Moosonee, police said in a news release.

Then on July 3 at about 2 a.m., James Bay OPP conducted a traffic stop on two bicycle riders on Hutchison Road in Moosonee after observing them riding without proper lights.

“One person failed to identify themselves and failed to stop for police,” said OPP.

“Officers continued the investigation at a residence on Hutchison Road and located the person, who then provided police with a false name.”

Police later identified the individual and were able to confirm him to be the same person related to the suspicious persons calls in June.

As a result of the investigation, the 24-year-old man from Brampton, Ont., was charged with two counts of failing to comply with a probation order, failing to comply with a release order and two counts of obstructing a peace officer as well as charges for improper bicycle lighting and not having a horn on his bike.

Further, a 36-year-old man from Moose Factory was located in the same residence and was arrested and charged with three counts of failing to comply with a release order.

Both accused were held pending bail hearing.

None of the allegations has been proven in court.
