SUDBURY -- CTV News has learned that the Town of Cochrane is thinking of possibly pulling the plug on the Polar Bear Habitat and shutting it down.
Town officials say it will depend on taxpayer’s sentiment.
Cochrane started the Polar Bear Habitat as a revenue-generating tourist attraction, but the mayor says the annual costs of operating the facility have been climbing.
It ranges from $300,000 a year, to up over $440,000 in 2017.
The habitat also needs a significant capital investment.
Mayor Denis Clement says taxpayers need to express their feelings on possibly closing down the facility to help council make a decision.
A public meeting is scheduled for the week of November 18, with the hope of making a council decision in December.
