Algonquin Boulevard is part of the 21 km stretch of Highway 101 that connects the east and west ends of Timmins.
The section of the roadway that the city is set to work on this year is from Balsam Street to near Brunett Road.
City officials told CTV News that the work will start near Brunett Road as the area has already been blocked off due to the fire at the Empire Complex.
Timmins councillor John Curley told CTV News, that work will get underway next week and pedestrians are asked to avoid the area due to safety concerns.
Fencing has already gone up and heavy equipment is moving in to begin the tear down of the overpass that was originally built for train tracks.
“I know there's lots of comments have been made that we don't want to lose, that it's kind of unique and whatnot and everything else,” said Curley.
“But we've always had issues there, especially in the rain and whatnot out. So this this removing of that, the roadway will be lifted, the drainage, proper drainage put in there.”
The city said contractors have set up temporary traffic detours to divert traffic around the construction zone.
The Porcupine and Mattagami River bridges will also be rehabilitated this summer, said city staff.
