TIMMINS -- For over 10 years, the Timmins Police Service has relied on two civilian assistants to keep the station and its cruisers in top shape.

And as seasoned athletes in the Special Olympics, police say Ashley Keizer and Eric Kaija are examples of what a strong work ethic can achieve.

"We’re very proud of Ashley’s most recent achievements in Thunder Bay, attending the Special Olympics there, as well as Eric in his endeavours that he’s taken part in, in athletics," said Inspector Darren Dinel, who supervises Keizer’s work at the station.

Keizer takes care of administrative duties like delivering packages, filing and paper shredding.

The rest of the time, he’s either training for, or competing in the Special Olympics.

Keizer recently placed in the top six in downhill skiing at February’s Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Thunder Bay.

"I was in (the sport) for 20 years," Keizer said. "This was my first nationals in Thunder Bay."

Eric Kaija is another resident Special Olympian at the police station.

When he’s not "knocking it out of the park" cleaning police cruisers, he’s also passionate about powerlifting, having won several gold and silver medals in national and provincial competitions.

"I like keeping in good shape, I like pushing myself," said Kaija.

"I have a set at home in the garage, there, so I always work out every week."

Kaija and Keizer’s cohorts at the station said they’re pleasant to socialize with, especially when it comes to talking about sports.

And when it comes to their work, they’re shining examples.

"They’re a tremendous addition to our workplace atmosphere," said Marc Depatie, communications coordinator at the police service.

"They’re Special Olympians, they are examples for others to follow and they’re contribution to their community, in terms of their selfless work here at the Timmins Police Service, is absolutely appreciated."

Kaija is training for his next competitions in North Bay and Kitchener this spring.

For Keizer, he said he’s still planning his next move but that his work always keeps him busy.

"I do the best job I can... for them."
