SUDBURY -- Following a number of close calls, the Timmins Police Service is warning of increased surveillance at the intersection of Hwy 101 and Kamiskotia Road in the west end of the city.
"Based on complaints received, it appears that drivers who are approaching the intersection from either direction while on Hwy 101 are electing to overtake traffic slowing to turn left by passing these vehicles on the right by using the right turn lanes that exist to facilitate right turns," police said in a news release.
The right turn lanes at the intersection are in place to allow a right turn onto Kamiskotia Road if approaching from the east, or a right turn onto Government Road if approaching from the west, the release said.
"These lanes are not to be used to facilitate the overtaking of traffic on the right," police said. "Additionally, in certain cases, drivers have opted to leave the roadway to complete the passing of stopped traffic on the right."
That's a violation of Ontario's Highway Traffic Act, which says, "No driver of a motor vehicle shall overtake and pass another vehicle by driving off the roadway."
Police plan to monitor the intersection "to enhance roadway safety in this area.
"Those motorists found to be in violation will have their driving behavior addressed in a firm but fair manner by the Timmins police," the release said.
