The Timmins Chamber of Commerce held its quarterly member meeting Thursday, where its ‘Business Takes the Lead Committee’ handed out the first cheque from its new fundraising effort.

Timmins Food Bank was the very first recipient of a $10,000 cheque from the chamber's ‘100 People Who Care’ campaign.

It was launched in October and aims to find 100 people to donate $100 each quarter.

The money will be pooled and donated to a local organization.

With this first donation, the food bank plans to purchase a new commercial refrigerator.

Dan Ayotte is the committee chair.

“Just to find not-for-profit organizations who really need it, somebody who has a project in mind that would be in the $10,000 range, and just to donate. We need the donations to make this happen every quarter. That's the big thing. And if we go over 100, it'd be even better.” said Ayotte.

Anyone who donates is able to nominate an organization that they think is worthy every quarter.
