Timmins Food Bank operating from a new location

Share

The Timmins Food Bank is working out of a new location on Cedar Street South, in the former Daily Press building.

Food bank president Rick Young said he never thought the Timmins Food Bank would last more than a few years when it opened in 2006. But as time went on, it eventually outgrew its old place.

“Our old setup, we handled that can of food seven times before it got to the end user -- now everything is unloaded here," said Young.

"We’re just waiting now for our walk-in fridge and walk-in freezer and walk-in cooler.”

Young said the move has been in the works for more than three years and it will make for a smoother operation and be able to serve people better.

About 4,300 people are registered with the Timmins Food Bank. Clients are allowed to come once a month and around 150 people are served weekly.

The food bank will not be the only organization located in the Daily Press building, now owned by Cochrane District Social Services Administration Board.

There will be others, but they're not ready to open just yet.

“We have the United Way, of course the food bank, as well as the Cochrane District Social Planning Committee, as well as the Anti-Hunger Coalition," said Melanie Dufresne, communications manager with CDSSAB.

"They’re all food agencies that work within the community in terms of programming, in terms of supplying healthy food access to the community ... so this is really an opportunity to have a better collaboration and alignment of those programs and services within Timmins.”

Dufresne said they'll be ready to welcome the public in a month or two.

The Timmins Food Bank gives out bags of food on Wednesday mornings from 8:15-11:15. It's also a good time to drop off donations and see the operation in progress.
