Timmins event raises concussion awareness
The Porcupine Health Unit is teaming up with the Timmins Rock Junior ‘A’ hockey team for a special event on Family Day.
They will launch a new campaign called 'Heads Up' during their home game against the Hearst Lumberjacks.
The goal of the campaign is to increase awareness about concussions. Officials said concussions are common in sport that often go unnoticed.
How to recognize, prevent and manage concussions will be included in the campaign's messaging. Educating young people about the brain injury, officials said, is the best way to create positive change.
"So the Timmins Rock have been a great advocate for our community,” said the health unit’s Kendra Luxmore.
“They're our hockey heroes to our little ones across the community and we know that they're great role models who have personal experiences with concussions and who are able to speak to that. So following the game, there will actually be a meet-and-greet where the youth can meet up with the players and hear about their own stories and the importance of sitting it out."
The event starts at 2 p.m. and tickets are available on the Timmins Rock website.
