Three taken to hospital after residential fire in the Sault

A fire Monday morning in Sault Ste. Marie sent three people to hospital and caused significant smoke and fire damage.

Sault firefighters responded at 8 a.m. to a multi-residential unit fire in the 200 block of Wellington Street East.

"Upon arrival, there was visible smoke from the second floor of the multi-unit residential structure," fire officials said in a news release.

"Firefighters assisted and removed two residents from one of the units on the second level. Fire crews were able to contain and extinguish the fire."

PUC Services was called to attend the scene and the Red Cross arrived to help displaced residents.

"There is significant fire and smoke damage to the second level of the dwelling," officials said.

"Three individuals were transported to hospital."

The Ontario Fire Marshal was called to the scene and as of Monday afternoon, the incident remained under investigation.
