SUDBURY -- Tampon Tuesday is only one week away and the need for hygiene products is high.

On the second Tuesday of every month, events take place across Canada as a way to raise awareness and help those who struggle financially to purchase menstrual products.

This initiative began in 2009 as a result of CTV London’s work with its local food bank.

Officials with United Way in Sudbury say feminine hygiene products are the most requested items at food banks, but least donated.

"The need is there. Every day, we come across individuals or hear stories of how people are impacted by not having product. Often times, people who are not struggling don't actually realize this is an issue, but it's an issue for a lot of people, for students, families who are struggling, people living on a limited income," said Shelly Lachapelle, with United Way.

Organizers of the Tampon Tuesday events in Sudbury say there are many individuals who have to choose between food and feminine products on a monthly basis.

"Anybody can relate to it or know somebody who has struggled. Sometimes a household struggles if they're going to get groceries for the week or for the month or products for themselves or their daughters," said Charlene Legacy, with United Way.

Feminine hygiene products of all kinds and monetary donations can be dropped off at Sudbury's Spacecraft Brewery from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Mar. 10.

Tampon Tuesday events will be taking place in other communities across the north at various times including:

  • Timmins – March 10
  • North Bay - March 24 all day at the United Way office
