Suspected drug dealer assaulted officer, Sault police say
A suspect riding a bicycle on Gibbs Street in Sault Ste. Marie this week has been charged with assaulting police, along with drug-related offences.
The incident took place April 15 around 3:30 p.m. when police on patrol recognized the 29-year-old suspect on the bike. He was already wanted on a warrant.
“When officers advised the accused they were being arrested on the strength of a warrant, the accused ran away,” Sault police said in a news release Wednesday.
“Officers caught up with the accused who continued to physically resist arrest. While being apprehended, the accused attempted to pull an officer to the ground by grabbing their vest. Officers gained control of the accused, and they were arrested.”
A search of the suspect uncovered about six grams of suspected fentanyl, a knife and paraphernalia consistent with drug trafficking, police said.
The approximate street value of drugs seized is $1,000.
Charges include trafficking, resisting arrest, assaulting police, three counts of failing to comply with a release order and failing to appear in court.
The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
