Suspect in triple stabbing in Sudbury charged with attempted murder

A 34-year-old suspect is in custody after three people received serious but not life-threatening injuries in a stabbing attack late Thursday morning in Sudbury.

Charges include three counts each of attempted murder, aggravated assault and assault with a weapon and one count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

 The incident took place at Canadian Mental Health Association Sudbury/Manitoulin on Larch Street around 11 a.m.

“Information provided was that an individual had attended the agency, became upset, stabbed multiple people and then fled on foot,” Sudbury police said in a news release.

“Upon arrival, officers located three individuals who had sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. They were transported to hospital by City of Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services.”

Operators working at the 911 emergency response centre sent details to responding officers and the suspect was found not far from the scene.

“The person believed to be responsible on Minto Street at Larch Street,” police said.

“Upon searching the individual, officers located what is believed to be the knife used during the attack.”

In a statement, the CMHA said they couldn’t say much because it is an active investigation.

“Our commitment to the safety and well-being of our staff and residents is paramount,” the statement said.

“We are aware of a situation involving our Healing with Hope Home … Respecting the privacy of all parties involved, we are taking immediate steps to address the situation and ensure staff and residents are safe and well supported. Further details will be shared once the investigation has been concluded.”

The 34-year-old suspect will be in bail court Dec. 1.
