Sudbury Spartans, Sault Steelers join new football league
Two northern Ontario football teams are joining the Ontario Power 5 Football League, a new league debuting this year.
“This ground-breaking league, comprised of four of the most storied semi-pro teams in Ontario history, promises to redefine football excellence in the region,” a news release from the league said Wednesday.
While called the Power 5, the league has four teams for now: The Sault Steelers, the Sudbury Spartans, the Sarnia Imperials and the Tri City Outlaws.
"We are thrilled to unveil the Ontario Power 5 Football League, a platform where the rich football heritage of Ontario can shine brighter than ever before," league president Barry Rushon said in a news release.
The release also said a fifth team has been provisionally accepted into the league next year
“Details surrounding the fifth team's identity and inaugural season will be released shortly, promising even more excitement and anticipation for football enthusiasts across Ontario,” the release said.
The season kicks off June 8 with the Spartans hosting the Steelers at James Jerome Field. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
