Sudbury’s Finlandia Village announces expansion

Share

A large seniors housing campus in Greater Sudbury is expanding. It’s the first construction project for Finlandia Village in 12 years.

More than 400 residents live in the six housing options, including the 110-bed long-term care facility.

Plans include building an extension to the current long-term care building, adding 32 beds on the main level and 20 apartments for seniors on the upper two levels.

“We have over 600 people waiting on our long-term care list for only 110-bed existing home,” said executive director David Munch.

Eila and Niilo Saari moved into the apartments at Finlandia five years ago, but in January, Niilo had to move into the long-term care facility due to a decline in health.

Because of the various housing options on the campus, the couple can still be together while Niilo gets the care he needs.

“I am able to visit my husband Niilo daily. He is still at home, in The Village,” Eila told the audience.

The entire project has a $32-million price tag, with funding coming from the provincial government and bank financing.

Finlandia kicked off its $2 million capital campaign with a $500,000 donation from the Lougheed Foundation.

Local politicians said housing for older adults is desperately needed in Greater Sudbury. Nickel Belt MPP France Gélinas said Finlandia Village is an example of how seniors can live together.

“They all share a campus, they all live together,” Gélinas said.

“All of the activities are for everybody at Finlandia Village. It doesn’t matter where you live, it doesn’t matter who you are, everybody is welcome … This changes everything. The fact that you are part of a community.”

Officials at Finlandia Village hope to have shovels in the ground in May, with occupancy expected in 2026.
