Magic mushroom store in Sudbury, Ont., closes after visit by police

Share

A store at the corner of Elm and Durham streets called Shroomyz that sold magic mushrooms has closed.

Sudbury police said they visited the shop Tuesday morning.

"Officers attended the business yesterday morning and spoke with the store manager," police spokesperson Kaitlyn Dunn said in an email.

"The store is closed and officers will continue to monitor the store to ensure compliance."

On Monday, Joe, the manager of the store told CTV News that opening the store was a form a protest, and said they are trying to operate similarly to weed dispensaries that operated long before they were strictly legal.

He said that the mushrooms – which have psilocybin as the active ingredient -- helped him overcome major depression and the store wanted to give people access to a safe supply.

While studies are being done on whether psilocybin is effective in treating mental health disorders, it is illegal in Canada.

There are still operating Shroomyz stores in the Toronto area.
