A police officer in Greater Sudbury has been charged with assault following an investigation by the Special Investigations Unit.

In a news release Wednesday, SIU director Joseph Martino said he “has reasonable grounds to believe a Greater Sudbury Police Service officer committed a criminal offence in relation to serious injuries suffered by a 49-year-old man last December.”

The incident took place early in the morning on Dec. 9, 2023, when police responded to a domestic disturbance call.

“Officers arrested the man for mischief and handcuffed him,” the SUI news release said.

“There was an interaction between the subject official and the man. The man was later taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with serious injuries.”

The Sudbury police constable is charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm. He will make an appearance in the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury on July 10.

“As the matter is before the courts, and in consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU will not provide further comment on the investigation,” the release said.
