A 29-year-old man is in Sudbury Jail Friday morning after stealing a pickup truck in Lively and leading police on a chase that ended with a crash downtown.

Officers were on their way to investigate the stolen vehicle around 6:15 a.m. Aug. 16 when calls about an aggressive and dangerous driver came into 911.

"Information provided was that the driver of a pickup truck had attended an establishment on Main Street and while inside the establishment an unknown individual entered the vehicle and drove off," Greater Sudbury Police Service said in a news release.

"The vehicle was running when it was stolen," police spokesperson Kaitlyn Dunn told CTVNewNorthernOntario.ca in an email.

It was seen travelling on MR55 towards towards Copper Cliff.

"While officers were en route, our 911 emergency communications centre received multiple traffic complaints regarding the vehicle as it was being driven in an aggressive and dangerous manner, at a high speed while swerving across the road," police said.

When officers encountered the vehicle on Lorne Street, they tried unsuccessfully to pull the driver over.

The driver didn't stop, running a red light at Ontario Street, so officers decided not to pursue the vehicle out of concern for public safety.

The vehicle was later found abandoned on Elm Street downtown after striking a barrier.

"Information provided was that the driver had fled on foot towards the bus depot," police said.

"Based on the description of the individual, officers located the person believed to be responsible on Medina Lane and took the person into custody."

Suspecting the driver was impaired, a drug recognition expert tried to conduct an evaluation, but the man refused.

He is charged with motor vehicle theft, dangerous operation, failing to stop for police, impaired driving and refusing to comply with a police demand.

The man is scheduled to attend bail court Friday.
