SUDBURY -- Health officials in Sudbury are once again confirming multiple new cases of COVID-19, with eight new infections announced Sunday evening.
According to Public Health Sudbury & Districts, all of the new cases are from Greater Sudbury. Officials say that six are said to have contracted the virus as a result of close contact of another case, while the other two are still under investigation.
“Our daily case counts are at an all-time high since the pandemic began, with 48 new cases reported over the last week. This surge is not a trend we want to continue,” Dr. Penny Sutcliffe, medical officer of health with Public Health Sudbury & Districts said in a news release. “I am asking everyone to critically assess daily actions and decisions and to take deliberate steps to reduce the spread of COVID-19.”
This marks the sixth day in a row that the health unit has reported multiple COVID-19 cases per day. The most for the week came on Fri. Nov 6, when a total of 20 infections were reported.
Dominic Giroux, the CEO of Health Science's North in Sudbury, the region's largest hospital, took to twitter calling for vigilance.
The surge in cases comes as the province implements its new coloured-tiered system meant to be used as a framework to gradually increase restrictions at the local level. Public Health Sudbury & Districts currently sits in the ‘green-prevent’ category, which has the least amount of restrictions.
Any decisions on moving a health unit to another level on the tier is to be made by the province.
