Sudbury Five declared winner after opposing team left the court
It was a bizarre ending to Thursday night's Sudbury Five basketball game with the opposing team walking off the court before the end.
In the dying seconds of play, the Five's Duane Notice connected on what fans thought was a game-tying three-point jump shot.
The visting Windsor Express team disagreed, contending Notice was not in three-point territory and chose to walk off the court, refusing to play the rest of the game.
Referees deemed the three pointer good bringing the score to 112-112 with 0.2 seconds left on the clock.
"With Windsor walking off, the refs gave them a technical foul by team which allowed Sudbury Five player Duane Notice to shoot a free-throw, which was unsuccessful," SW Sports & Entertainment told CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca in an email.
"With Windsor not present and time still remaining in regulation, the outcome of the game could not be determined and required league review."
The Basketball Super League said Friday morning its backing the call made by the referees since there is no video review and the game should have gone into overtime.
"The Sudbury Five have been declared the winners of the contest against the Windsor Express on Feb. 15," the league said in a social media post.
"The events that took place during the contest are currently under review."
