There has been a new development regarding the strike at the Timmins Victor M. Power Airport.
Officials with the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees say the mediator has ordered both parties back to the bargaining table.
However, the union says its members fully expect to go on strike at 6 pm on Monday unless a final deal is reached.
The union says people using the airport should expect travels to be impacted.
Workers affected include: maintenance and airfield technicians, mechanics, electricians, some administrative personnel, and the people who plow the runways.
Last week, the city applied to the federal labour minister to deem at least five of the employees essential service workers and keep them working.
“The Mayor does not seem willing to help negotiate a fair contract, forcing us to take job action to have him recognize the value of these workers who are vital for the safe operations of the airport,” says Sharon Desousa, Public Service Alliance of Canada Regional Executive Vice-President for Ontario.
Rock Foy is the director of corporate services for the City of Timmins.
“If they decide to go on strike, our intention is to continue to provide the normal operations at the Victor M Power Airpot. So whatever that will take, we will ensure the normal services there.” said Foy.
As the March break approaches at the end of this week, many families will be using the airport to head out on vacation.
Drew McMillin is following the story and will have more information as it becomes available.
