Smile cookies support three Greater Sudbury charities

There were plenty of smiles in Greater Sudbury, Ont., on Tuesday morning as local Tim Hortons franchises handed over proceeds from their recent Smile Cookie Campaign to three local charities.

The Sudbury Food Bank received $19,882.90

“My reaction is the incredibleness of the people that run the Tim Hortons and operate the Tim Hortons in our community the decision that they made to help the Sudbury Food Bank,” said Dan Xilon, the food bank’s executive director.

“The fact their customers supported them 100 per cent is just amazing. I mean who doesn’t like to get a smile,” said Dan Xilon, the executive director of the Sudbury Food Bank.

Health Sciences North received $73,566.12

“The funds raised will support patient care at Health Sciences North purchase life-saving equipment, (support) life-saving research and also support future capital development needs for patients living across northeastern Ontario who require care here in Sudbury,” said Shanna Crispo, the director of marketing, communications and community engagement for the Health Sciences North Foundation.

CTV Lions Children’s Christmas Telethon received $105,379.35

“The Greater Sudbury people is a wonderful people,” said telethon chair, Sam Khoury.

“They always there to help the telethon and help their community and especially Tim Hortons. Tim Hortons is a fantastic help to all the charity organizations in Sudbury.”

The presentations were made at the Tim Hortons on Lasalle Boulevard in New Sudbury and officials said that it was the community that made the campaign a success.

“The Sudbury area is super at supporting our charities,” said the franchise owner,  Marian MacKenzie.

“We had volunteers this year we had several volunteers come in and help out and lots of people came in and just gave us a smile and left with a smile.”

Officials with Tim Horton’s said 100 per cent of the sales from smile cookies support local charities.

Police say the search for a vulnerable child who went missing in Mississauga, Ont. Thursday evening continues. Three-year-old Zaid, who is described as possibly non-verbal, was last seen at 6:20 p.m. in Mississauga’s Erindale Park, near Dundas Street West and Mississauga Road. He was not wearing shoes or socks at the time.
