Skead Road in Greater Sudbury reopens following fatal crash

Skead Road (MR86) reopened at about 1:30 p.m. after being closed from Nickel Rim South Mine Road to MacLennan Mine Road for several hours following a fatal two-vehicle collision early Saturday morning.

Emergency crews received the call about the collision in the Greater Sudbury community of Falconbridge just before 3:30 a.m.

“One individual was pronounced deceased on scene,” said the Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS), in a news release Saturday.

“Two other individuals were transported to HSN (Health Sciences North) to receive medical treatment.”

Police are not releasing the name of the deceased at this time but offered condolences to friends and family.

There is no word on the extent of the other injuries.

Members of the GSPS Traffic Management Unit are still investigating the collision.

The section of Skead Road was expected to remain closed until noon Saturday, said police in a tweet.

“Skead Rd remains closed to all general traffic between Nickel Rim South Mine Roadd and MacLennan Mine Road,” read the release Saturday morning.

“An emergency route has been identified through the scene for emergency services such as EMS and fire (services).”

There were no alternative routes available according to GSPS.
