SAULT STE. MARIE -- The Sault Ste. Marie and District Labour Council and affiliates stood shoulder-to-shoulder with local striking Teamster rail workers on Monday.
About 40 people rallied together holding signs and flags in front of the Canadian National (CN) rail gate on Carmen’s Way in Sault Ste. Marie.
Those involved say their goal is to bring more attention to the situation at hand and hold employers accountable for the health and safety of their workers.
Cody Alexander is the 2nd vice president of the Sault Ste. Marie and District Labour Council.
"In Sault Ste. Marie, we have tons of rail lines going through, and for us, we want to support the people that operate those and support them to operate them safely. So, we take their word at it. So, if they say they’re fatigued, we got to trust the workers," said Alexander.
The labour council and affiliates say they’re also hoping to send a message to local politicians.
Shortly after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning CTV News learned that Teamsters Canada reached a tentative agreement with the striking workers.
Union officials say normal operations will resume Wednesday morning.
