It's something we all had to do in school, but now some schools are doing away with homework.

A school in Montreal is the latest, but would that idea fly in northern Ontario?

Students may not be big fans of homework, but assigning extra tasks is commonplace at many schools.

Some experts, however, say the downside of doing so may outweigh the merits.

Steven Shaw is the Associate Professor, Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology at McGill University.

"We find this is a major reason why we have fights between parents and children, is over homework. So, it creates that problem, and there isn't a lot of evidence it does anything positive." said Shaw.

The people CTV News spoke with in Sault Ste. Marie disagree with the idea of removing homework from area schools, saying it teaches children valuable life skills.

"I don't think they should have hours and hours of homework, but I definitely think a half an hour, hour of homework a night is not unreasonable just to teach kids responsibility and time management." said one woman.

"I think it's absurd personally. It's not going to help our kids in the future. Once they get to college or university, if they don't have any experience with homework or studying, they're going to cost their parents a lot of money in my opinion." said another.

"That’s not right. They need the extra work. They need all the extra help they can get. I have two nieces in elementary school and they bring out the homework and we help them with it. It's extra learning." said one father.

Officials with the Algoma District School Board and the Huron Superior Catholic School Board say none of their schools have banned homework assignments for students.
