Second double homicide in Kirkland Lake in less than 2 weeks

Share

Members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have launched a homicide investigation after two people were found dead inside a Kirkland Lake residence on Tuesday evening.

This comes less than two weeks after a man and a woman were killed in a home on Woods Street in the town.

On Aug. 8, shortly before 8 p.m., officers with the Kirkland Lake Detachment arrived at a residence on Kirkpatrick Street for a well-being check.

“Officers located two deceased individuals, one male and one female,” police said in a news release Wednesday.

Investigators said they believe there is no imminent threat to public safety.

“The investigation is in its early stages and no further details can be released at this time,” said police.

“Residents of the area should expect to see a large police presence.”

A post-mortem will be held at a later date.

Police are looking for surveillance or dash cam video from the area between Aug. 5 and Aug. 8 in connection with the investigation.

Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to call the Kirkland Lake OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously.

In an interview with CTV News, Kirkland Lake Mayor Stacy Wight acknowledged that her community has issues with drug addition just as there are in communities across the north – but people need to know that there are resources available to help.

"We do know that these acts of violence were not random," said Wight.

"We do believe that our community remains as safe as it always has been and again we just urge people who are in crisis to seek out the resources they need."

“The OPP reminds all members of the public to be aware of their personal safety at all times,” said police.
