An impaired snow machine driver without a helmet crashed into a snowbank last week, police in northwestern Ontario say.

Ontario Provincial Police in Dryden said the incident took place at 12:30 a.m. Dec. 27 when police were conducting general patrol duties.

Officers spotted someone driving a snow machine "without a helmet who proceeded to collide with a snowbank at a high rate of speed on Casimir Avenue," police said in a news release.

"Fortunately, the individual suffered no injuries as a result of the collision."

A 22-year-old from Dryden has been charged with driving while impaired by alcohol, failing to wear a helmet and careless driving.

The accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Dryden on Jan. 27.

"Motorists who drive impaired by alcohol or drugs are subject to drivers licence suspensions, fines, vehicle impoundments, criminal records and increased insurance costs," police said.

"Please drive responsibly and don't take drugs or drink and drive."
