Sault Ste. Marie police say they have a suspect in custody after a vicious assault on the boardwalk Thursday night sent one person to hospital in critical condition.

Officers were called to St. Mary's River Drive around 7:20 p.m. Aug. 15 and found an unresponsive person who appeared to have sustained serious physical injuries, Sault police said in a news release Friday morning.

"An investigation revealed the accused and the victim, who had met for the first time that evening on the boardwalk, got into a verbal argument which turned physical," police said.

"The accused had kicked the victim, causing them to fall on the street and then stomped on their head."

The victim was taken to hospital in an ambulance.

A 32-year-old man, who matched the description of the suspect, was arrested near St. Mary's River Drive and Bay Street in connection with the attack.

He is charged with aggravated assault and is being held pending a bail hearing.

Det. Const. Corey Brown is looking for witnesses and anyone with information is asked to call him at 705-949-6300 ext. 359.
