Provincial police release new details in recent northern Ont. shooting death
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in partnership with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service continue to investigate a shooting death in West Nipissing that occurred Wednesday.
In a news release Saturday, OPP identified the victim as 53-year-old Joseph Genereux, a local of the community.
Police previously said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
As a result of the investigation, a 48-year-old local man has been charged with second-degree murder along with unauthorized possession of a firearm and knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm.
The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court in North Bay on April 12.
None of the allegations has been proven in court.

Shortly after 5 p.m. on March 13, Nipissing West OPP responded to a report of a shooting at a residence on Bradley Street in the community of River Valley, located about 32 kilometres north of Markstay-Warren.

Police have not released any details as to the motive for the incident but told CTV News there is believed to be no threat to public safety.
“Investigators believe this is an isolated incident and there is no immediate threat to public safety,” said the OPP.

This incident comes only days after OPP exchanged gunfire with suspects in another rural northern Ontario community.
