SUDBURY -- The Ontario government has given Conseil scolaire de district catholique du Nouvel-Ontario approval for the purchase of a property in Val Therese for the construction of a new French-language elementary school.

In a news release Wednesday evening, the province said the $930,238 investment will provide the location for a new learning environment for the students in Val Therese and Hanmer. The project is part of the province’s capital investment program to support students with better learning spaces.

“From modernizing our curriculum to revitalizing our classrooms and their facilities, we are investing in our students and giving them every tool to achieve their full potential,” Education Minister Stephen Lecce said in the release.

“Our financing of the land purchase further demonstrates our government’s historic investment in Ontario’s schools and our overall commitment to supporting our students and families.”

“The funding to purchase this property is great news for working families in the Val Therese and Hanmer communities,” said Sam Oosterhoff, Parliamentary assistant to the Minister of Education. "This investment will support a quality learning environment and new opportunities for local children so that they can realize their full potential.”

The purchase of land in Val Therese will support the construction of a new, 567 pupil French-language elementary school with a four-room childcare centre and a one-room child and family centre.

The new school will consolidate ÉÉC Saint-Joseph, ÉÉC Sainte-Thérèse and ÉÉC Notre Dame. The municipal address of the property is 4291-4559 Municipal Road 80, Val Therese

The province announced in Budget 2019 that over the next 10 years, Ontario is investing more than $12 billion in capital grants, including allocating $550 million in 2020-21 for new schools, additions and major renovations.
