Watermain break closes intersection in Sault Ste. Marie

Share

A watermain break prompted an intersection to close in Sault Ste. Marie on Thursday morning.

The public is being asked to avoid the area of Shannon Road and Arizona Avenue on Thursday as repairs to a watermain are underway.

The intersection is expected to remain closed "until sometime in the evening," PUC Services said in a news release.

"At this time, the duration of the closure is uncertain. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience and understanding."

Patterson said water service to roughly 20 customers is impacted.

Road closure signs are in place to protect both utility crews working to fix the problem as well as the public.

"For any questions or concerns, please contact our customer experience team at 705-759-6500," PUC Services said.

It is a bitterly cold morning with temperatures of -16C at 11 a.m. but feeling more like -20C with the windchill.

Temperatures will rise throughout the day with an expected high of -8C around 10 p.m.

Power outage

The series of power outages showing on the PUC Services outage map Thursday morning were caused by a glitch in the system, company spokesperson Jairus Patterson confirmed to CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca in an email.

"There actually was no outages," Patterson said.

"During equipment maintenance, a switch triggered a false outage report in our system, which was then reported on the app."

The glitch has been repaired, he added.

A power interruption planned for the Queen Street West area on Friday has been rescheduled for Thursday.

"Your power will be turned off beginning at 10 p.m. and it will remain off until 4 a.m.," the utility company said.

"This interruption is necessary for improvements to the electrical distribution system and to help avoid prolonged, unplanned outages at a later date."
