SUDBURY -- A 31-year-old man from Renfrew, Ont., is facing stunt driving and impaired driving charges after he was arrested Dec. 4 just east of Sturgeon Falls.
Police received the complaint at 12:50 a.m. about a speeding car heading west on Highway 17.
"Officers immediately set-up stationary radar enforcement on Highway 17 in Sturgeon Falls and within a few minutes, confirmed the suspect vehicle was travelling at a speed of more than 170 kilometres per hour in a posted 50 km/h speed limit zone," Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Tuesday.
"Officers followed the vehicle throughout residential areas in Sturgeon Falls as it was trying to evade police. A tandem stop was subsequently conducted on Highway 64."
The driver had open liquor in the vehicle, police said, and failed a roadside screening test. He is now charged with impaired driving, stunt driving and driving with open liquor in the vehicle.
His driver's license was suspended, his car impounded and he'll appear in the Ontario Court of Justice on Jan. 7 in Sturgeon Falls to answer to the charges.
The incident marks the 70th driver charged under the criminal impaired driving laws in the Nipissing West detachment area in 2020.
