Police investigating death on Manitoulin Island
Police are investigating a death in Wiikwemkoong First Nation on Manitoulin Island on Monday.
Emergency crews were called to a person in medical distress on Henry Street shortly after 11 p.m. April 29, Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Friday.
"This person was transported to hospital where they were later pronounced deceased," OPP said.
"There is no threat to public safety at this time."
The death is being investigated by the crime unit along with the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service, the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario and Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
OPP Const. Jessica Gilbertson told CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca in an email the death is not suspicious.
"Out of the privacy and respect for the family no other information will be released," Gilbertson said.
OPP Const. Phil Young said that anytime police are called in relation to a sudden death, they will conduct an investigation regarding the cause, sometimes in conjunction with the coroner's office.
A death deemed "not suspicious" in nature means there is no criminality involved.
"Furthermore, police will post a release if an occurrence draws a lot of public attention or police presence, regardless of what type of investigation it is – not just deaths," Young said.
