In just over a month's time, Ontario Provincial Police will be taking over policing in the town of Espanola.

The Ontario Civilian Police Commission recently approved a request from the town to disband the Espanola Police Service.

Officials for the town say the transition to the OPP will take place on October 11th and outstanding issues, like severance pay, will go to arbitration for resolution.

Espanola Mayor Ron Piche says he expects some of the officers and staff from the Espanola Police Service will join the OPP.

The cost savings of the switch is estimated at $5.6-million over the next ten years.
