OPP officer shoots man holding 'edged weapon' in Thessalon
Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer in Thessalon, Ont. shot a 35-year-old man Friday night who was reportedly armed with an "edged weapon."
The man survived the shooting and is now in stable condition at a Sudbury hospital.
In a news release Saturday, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said officers responded to a 911 call reporting a disturbance in the area of Frances and Ontario streets at approximately 7:15 p.m.
“East Algoma OPP responded to a call for service on Frances Street,” said police in a news release.
“During the course of the investigation, one person suffered injuries.”
The man was armed with an edged weapon, the SIU said, which prompted an OPP officer to discharge a conducted energy weapon – also called a taser – at the suspect.
“There was an interaction and an officer shot his firearm at the man,” read the SIU news release.
“The man was arrested and taken to hospital in Sudbury.”
Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.
“The OPP has notified the SIU, which has invoked its mandate,” said police.
“As a result, the OPP will not be able to provide any further information. Any other inquiries should be directed to the SIU.”

The SIU is asking anyone who may have information about the incident to contact investigators at 1-800-787-8529 or submit evidence including statements, photos and/or video or other details online.
