Two homes in Lively have been destroyed by a fire, Sudbury Fire tells CTV News.
Sudbury Fire Crews responded to the call around 5:30 Saturday afternoon. When crews arrived, there were flames through the roof of the one home and it was quickly spreading to the adjacent home, so additional crews were called to the scene.
“The first residence there was one individual inside the residence and it’s my understanding that a neighbour was able to go into the home and assist her in getting out,” Brian Morrison, Acting Deputy Fire Chief for Sudbury Fire Services told CTV News.
That neighbour was John Soini. He was coming home from work when he noticed what appeared to be smoke coming from a nearby garage. After originally thinking it was a BBQ, he quickly realized it was something more.
“I saw really thick, thick black smoke and I thought something’s wrong here,” Soini tells CTV News. “So my gut instinct told me something was wrong and the flames just got bigger and bigger really fast.”
That’s when Soini decided to jump into action. After ensuring nobody was in that house, he quickly went to the neighbouring residence, as the fire was spreading.
“I walked in, there was an elderly lady inside and her dog,” Soini says. “I said you’ve got to get out now, the fire and the flames are getting huge, you’ve got to get out now.
Assuming the woman was leaving with him, he left. When he realized she stayed behind he went back.
"I said you have to get out now. She said ‘well I can't I'm disabled’. I said ‘well, you're coming with me’. So I grabbed her I just scooped her up, I picked her up and I said ‘we're going out’. She said ‘it's just me and my dog’. I said ‘okay’. And the dog came and I just grabbed her. It was just instinct."
Sudbury Fire says there were no injuries reported. They say by 7:12, the fire was under control.
Morrison says the neighbourhood quickly came together.
“These are always bad times for families and it’s my understanding neighbours are getting to know each other here on the street as a result of this and they’ll be reaching out and helping their neighbours, and that’s a good thing.”
At this time the cause of the fire is not known.
