Police are calling it a record setting drug bust in North Bay.
They say it’s the largest fentanyl haul in the force's history.
The investigation at a North Bay residence was carried out with the help of the Canada Border Services Agency.
It is alleged that CBSA’s International Mail Processing Centre in Toronto intercepted two packages that were found to contain prohibited weapons marked for delivery to a residence in North Bay. The agency worked with local police to get a search warrant for the address.
“As a result of working with them we were able to secure a search warrant. And they did do a search warrant on this residence and when they entered into it, a number of weapons were seized, as well as a substantial quantity of fentanyl and some methamphetamines, as well.” said Constable John Schultz, of North Bay Police Service.
The search resulted in the seizure of:
- 3 switch blades
- 2 Tasers
- Butterfly knife
- 2 sets of brass knuckles
- 114g of a purple fentanyl and heroine mixture
- 87g of crystal methamphetamine
- $17,000 in Canadian Currency
The street value of the drugs is estimated at over $100,000.
Police say the amount of fentanyl seized is enough to cause 55,000 fatal overdoses.
Detective Peter Brunette works with the street crimes unit and says this is a win for the city because it keeps a lethal drug off the streets.
“I've never seen a drug as devastating as fentanyl to our community. It's not only affecting those that suffer from addiction, but it's also affecting their families and it is very devastating. So, it means a lot to us to get such a large seizure off the street.” said Brunette.
A 32-year-old North Bay man faces numerous charges was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
