NOJHL's Timmins Rock wins in overtime at the Centennial Cup
By becoming the NOJHL champion, the Timmins Rock earned their berth in the Centennial Cup, the National Junior A championship, being played this month in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.
Their first game was Friday afternoon against the Yarmouth Mariners from the Maritime Hockey League.
After a scoreless first period, Yarmouth’s Ryan Semple pots the first goal of the game 1:43 into the second. The goal was quickly answered by Nolan Ring of The Rock less than a minute later making it 1-1.
The Mariner’s Reid Vos breaks the tie at 5:08.
It’s 2-1 for Yarmouth.
A power play goal by Harry Clark restores the balance and a go-ahead goal by Thomas Beard 2 minutes later gives The Rock a 3-2 advantage that they hold onto going into the third period.
After most of the third is played, we hear again from Reid Vos with about 20 seconds left in regulation time… it’s tied at 3’s and off to overtime.
After a couple close chances in the extra end, Ethan Pool’s breakaway goal at 4:14 gives The Rock a 4-3 victory over the Mariners.
Next game for the Timmins Rock is Sunday against the Cobras de Terrebonne from the Quebec Junior Hockey League.
