To help mark Youth Suicide Prevention Week, the Sudbury Youth Action Centre has purchased a bunch of new t-shirts and its encouraging youth to decorate them as a form of self-expression.

The t-shirts, which read 'my life matters', are being hung on a clothesline outside the Sudbury Youth Action Centre at its new office on Pine Street.

It's all to help raise awareness about teen suicide, which is an issue in northern locations.

“Sudbury is a community that has a high first nations and Inuit population, they are 27 times higher than the national average when it comes to suicide rates,” explained Julie Gorman, Sudbury Action Centre For Youth program coordinator.

“When I was sixteen I dealt with suicide," said Jordan Paquette, a program participant.

"My brother, my cousin and my father and myself as well. I didn't really have anywhere to go or home and SACY (Sudbury Youth Action Centre) is like the second family I never had."

The t-shirts will be on display throughout Youth Suicide Prevention Week, which runs until Friday.
