The Sudbury Wolves hockey team called an 'emergency' news conference Thursday afternoon, saying it had some 'big' news to announce.

The announcement about the last-minute 'press conference' was made on social media shortly after noon on Dec. 7.

Turns out, it was a cheeky delivery of a beer promotion at the next home game.

"Ladies and gentleman, we have a trade to announce," a Wolves spokesperson said in an 18-second video posted to social media at 1:30 p.m.

"In return for your unwavering support over our last stretch of home games, you'll be receiving $5 Wolves Brew tomorrow night at the den. See you there."

Reaction to the announcement on Facebook was mixed.

"Wow lol. What a waste of everyone’s time. Thank you for that. What a joke," Cory Holmes said in the comments.

"Was that seriously the big important news!!," Tracy St. Georges said.

Several comments from non-drinkers were made.

"And what do the loyal fans who don't drink beer get ??????," Doreen Wilkes-Wilcox commented.

Other found it humourous.

"Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. Love the angle. Go Wolves!," Kristopher Cacciotti said.

The Wolves host the Niagara Icedogs on Friday at 7:05 p.m.

Sudbury Wolves are in the middle of the pack for the Ontario Hockey League's Eastern Conference, with 29 points and a record of 13-10-2-1.

The Icedogs are currently in last place in the Eastern Conference.

The Wolves are coming off a 3-2 loss against the Soo Greyhounds on Wednesday night.
