There are mining layoffs this week in Timmins.
Newmont Goldcorp says 11 positions have been eliminated at the Hoyle Pond Mine Operation, and 16 jobs will be re-structured with different duties.
Eight contractors have also now been let go at the company's Borden Gold Mine project, near Chapleau.
Marc Lauzier is the general manager at Newmont Goldcorp Porcupine Gold Mines. Lauzier says the decision was hard, but necessary.
"Situations like yesterday are never easy. 11 people lost their position. I just want to remind everybody that we do have close to 800 employees. And so, we are just trying to keep the morale up, keep safety, keep everybody focused. At the same time, it’s important that we restructure and that we be responsible about how we run our business and that we show our new company that we can run this business well, so that when I ask for investments in the future, to set ourselves up, I'm supported by the company.“
Officials say they have been evaluating costs since the Newmont purchase last April.
