Council in the Municipality of Huron Shores will meet this week to declare the office of the mayor officially vacant.

The move comes after Mayor Matthew Seabrook submitted his resignation, effective Jan. 8.

"The resignation was formally received by the clerk’s office on the same date," the municipality said in a news release.

"Council will officially declare the office of the mayor vacant at its next meeting on Jan. 15, 2025, in accordance with the Municipal Act, 2001."

Following this declaration, the process of filling the vacancy will begin in accordance with provincial requirements.

The next municipal election is Oct. 26, 2026. Council can hold a byelection to replace Seabrook or appoint someone to replace him.

"We thank Mayor Seabrook for his service during his time in office and wish him well in his future endeavors," the release said.

"The municipality remains committed to serving residents without interruption during this transition and will provide further updates as decisions are made."
