Update:

Enviroment Canada says they do not believe the Sudbury storm produced a tornado, saying the cause was straight-line wind damage.

Original:

The storm that came through early Monday evening in Sudbury has caused masses of downed lines and reports of trees over lines around Greater Sudbury, especially in the New Sudbury area of the city.

Police are asking people to stay off roadways and waterways while crews work to clean up the damage.

There are at least 4,000 customers without power, with no estimate on when it will be restored.

Greater Sudbury Utilities has called in additional crews, and are dealing with emergencies and high-priority areas first, and will then work their way through the system.

GSU expects some neighbourhoods to be without power overnight.

Utility officials say for your safety, please stay away from any downed lines you may see.  They might be live and contact would prove fatal.  Stepping over or around downed lines is also UNSAFE, it is recommended to keep children and pets away from any lines or tree that have fallen over lines as well.  The minimum distance to stay away is at least 10 metres, preferably further.

Sudbury Hydro is also asking people to not call the reporting line looking for an update.
